What is the different between intrinsic aging versus external aging? What can we do to slow down the aging process both internally and externally?
To start, let's talk about what intrinsic aging actually is...
Intrinsic aging is the natural aging process that occurs within the body over many years regardless of outside influences. After the age of 20, a person produces about 1 percent less collagen in the skin each year. As a result, the skin becomes thinner and more fragile with age. Melanin production naturally decreases, along with hair follicles and sebaceous glands which hinder proper barrier protection in the skin.
Extrinsic aging happens in addition to intrinsic aging as a result of sun exposure and environmental factors. Some of the signs of extrinsic aging are visible capillaries, redness, wrinkles, dehydrated and dry skin.
Now that we understand the difference between the two and how they work together, how do we slow down the aging process?
Processed foods, foods in high sugar, sodium, and trans fats will all play a big role in aging. Eating poorly will break down the elasticity and collagen prematurely in your skin which are both vital in keeping a youthful glow.
By eating clean, natural foods our body is better able to focus on burning that energy in the right way instead of having to waste energy processing unnatural foods that don't do any real good for us.
Pollution is hard because for the most part, it's out of our control. Smog, toxic gases, dirt and free radicals are cruising around in the air around us at all different times. So if this is unavoidable, what is the best way to have the least interaction with these unfriendly elements?
Always apply an SPF in the morning, even if you do not plan to be outside for the day. Applying proper skincare will create layers of protection against pollution.
Wash your face AM and PM. Washing your face in the morning will rejuvenate the skin and open the pores, apply your moisturizer and SPF along with any other make-up and/or skincare routine. Washing your face in the evening cleanse anything the skin has accumulated during the day preparing it to restore itself overnight.
Whenever you experience stress your body triggers the stress hormone called cortisol, which affects sebum production, hydration levels and microcirculation. All of those things being affected will show themselves in acne, overproduction of oily glands and wrinkles.
The best thing to do is to try to keep your stress level as low as possible. Try putting a spoonful of CocoCanna in your coffee or tea in the morning, it's been to shown to be a natural anxiety reliever when directly ingested. Meditation and working out are very efficient ways to decrease stress as well.
4. Lifestyle Habits
Obviously, there are some habits that will age you quicker than others. Tanning, smoking, excessive alcohol on a regular basis, all of these things will age you faster than if you hadn't. There are some quieter culprits to be aware of out there that we don't pay much mind to though. Not drinking an adequate amount of water during the day, excessive caffeine, dirty make-up brushes, reusing towels and pillowcases for too long, all of these things can play a role in premature aging.
Where do you reside? Somewhere closer to the equator with constant sun exposure or in a crowded polluted city? If you live somewhere with a lot of sun exposure, be more mindful of SPF application. You may need to apply twice daily depending on your routine. Live in a city plagued with pollution? You may need to be double cleansing the skin in the evening to prevent free radicals who often get left to do damage in pores overnight.
Overall, it's very important to listen to what your body needs. The best way to slow down the aging process is a balanced diet, a proper skincare routine, and consistently using SPF.
Always apply CocoCanna as a hydration mask at night if you are feeling dry or your skin needs some extra love, you can also use CocoCanna as a cleansing oil.
Keep on glowin,
