Ingredients for Humans

As cancer and other disease are on the rise at a more rapid rate than ever in the U.S., it’s forced most of us to take a step back and change the way we look at what we’re putting in our body. We’re more health conscious than ever and words like MSG and GMO are now commonly known acronyms among the majority populous. We’ve been at this whole health food game for a while now, remember when being gluten free to ease up inflammation was just coming on the scene? Now if you’re not a keto vegan, you’re behind the times, friend.

So why spend all this money, time, and research on ingesting the best possible food for ourselves yet we completely ignore the largest organ we have, the epidermis. OUR SKIN.

U.S. researchers report that 1 in 8 of the 82,000 ingredients used in personal care products are industrial chemicals, including carcinogens, pesticides, reproductive toxins, and hormone disruptors.

Here are 5 reasons why you should be triple checking your products label ingredients, it has the power to save your life.

      1. There are only 10 banned ingredients in the U.S., but more than 1400 in the EU.

Manufacturers have to clean up their products before they export them to the EU because of the EU’s stricter safety standards. That means they leave all the toxins in the products we consumer here in America.

  1.     The Red Cross and Environmental Working Group (EWG) conducted a study in 2004 that detected over 287 synthetic chemicals in the cord blood of newborns.

Over 180 of them were found carcinogenic, 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system, and 208 can cause birth defects or abnormal development in animal tests.

  1.       Manufacturers are legally allowed to hide hundreds of chemicals in the ingredient “fragrance” or “parfum” and do not have to list them on the ingredient label. If your product contains the ingredient fragrance, there is no way to determine the true toxicity of the product. Watch out—even “fragrance-free” products use the ingredient “fragrance.” If a manufacturer isn’t willing to tell the consumer everything about how the product was made, you should absolutely pass on the product.

  1.    In his book Toxic Beauty, Samuel Epstein, MD, states it’s actually safer to consume your products than to put them on your skin. It is imperative to be aware that what you put on your skin absolutely does enter your bloodstream—and faster than if you swallowed it! Think of nicotine or estrogen patches, they’re used as drug delivery systems because they are an instant gateway to the bloodstream, bypassing the liver.

  1.    A number of carcinogenic contaminants are not required to be listed on your ingredients label. Formaldehyde (from DMDM hydantoin), 1,4-dioxane (from sodium lauryl sulfate, PEGs, and ingredients ending in -eth), nitrosamines (from triethanolamine, or TEA; diethanolamine, or DEA; or monoethanolmaine, or MEA), and hydroquinone (from tocopherals) can be included without informing consumers.

These points truly only scratch the surface on what really happens in some parts of the beauty industry where quantity becomes more desirable than quality and people turn into dollar signs. It’s important no matter how pretty the packaging is, always check the label’s ingredient. Like we said, it actually could save your life.
